Overcoming Vitamin B12 Deficiency Naturally: My Journey with Tharavaani

 




A few months ago, I had visited my Ayurvedic doctor because I was experiencing overall dullness and numbness in my right big toe. After asking me a few questions, my doctor suspected a Vitamin B12 deficiency. She explained that this is a highly common issue among vegetarians who follow a strict plant-based diet

Although she recommended a laboratory blood test before prescribing any medication, it made me wonder: How did our ancestors, who followed the exact same diet, never face this deficiency?
When I discussed this with my mother, she introduced me to an amazing traditional drink. I started preparing it at home, and after a few months of regular consumption, I feel significantly better, and the numbness has drastically reduced. I am sharing the details here based on my personal experience:
This is a traditional rice-based probiotic drink known as Tharavaani in Telugu, Palaisoru (or Pazhaya Soru) in Tamil, and Majjige Anna (or Chaddi Anna) in Kannada.
Here is how you can prepare it:
  1. Prepare the Pot: Take a clay or mud bowl (similar to the one shown in the video) that comes with a lid.
  2. Soak the Rice: Place your leftover cooked rice into the pot and pour enough water to ensure the rice is completely submerged.
  3. Store Safely: Close the lid and store the pot in a cool, dark place inside your house.
  4. Ferment: Let the mixture ferment for roughly 36 hours. For example, if you soak the rice tonight at 8:00 PM, it will be ready to consume the day after tomorrow at 8:00 AM
This is an ancient, time-tested technique in Bharat. To consume it, mix the fermented rice with majjige (buttermilk), a pinch of salt, and a dash of roasted cumin (jeera) powder for taste.
